The Mineral Wells Rams Soccer team is making a name for themselves on the field after an impressive regular season. This post season is lingering on, but in the best way as they have reached round 5, the regional finals. The Rams traveled to Fort Worth to Brewer High School to take on the Castleberry Lions Tuesday evening and played in front of packed stands of Ram fans, including students, teachers, coaches, and an assortment of others from Mineral Wells to cheer on the team in hopes of bringing home gold ball #4.
The offense struck early and the Rams scored their first goal off of a rebounded shot at the 22 minute mark and again only 7 minutes later. They went into half time up 2-0 and now had to play against the rough wind for the second half. The wind didn’t slow them down much, as they shot and scored again at 36 minutes to jumpstart the second half. Castleberry scored 2 goals during the second half, and it was a fight to the end for both teams as the Lions tried to tie it up and take it to a shootout. But the Ram fans kept the energy up and the Rams were able to hold them for the victory.
The team, the school, and the town are buzzing about the success the Rams have found, and celebrated on the field after the semi-final victory with the team and coaches. Second to the wins, is the buzz about their new hairstyles. Many of the players have bleached their hair in honor of their playoff run, Coach Borjon even got in on the fun, and as of late, assistant coach, Matt Williams did as well. He took a different route and ditched the blonde hair, and went straight for mohawk which grabbed the attention of the Rams fans during the game.
A post game speech was given to the fans, players, and families by Head Coach Rolando Borjon giving thanks to his seniors, and many others who have had a hand in the Rams success, both on and off the field and followed up with showing his appreciation for the fans who have packed the stands during this playoff run, traveling as far as to Lubbock recently. As he pointed to the stands where many fans still sat and watched as the celebration went on he said, “That right there gives me the chills. And I guarantee you the boys saw that over there and said, ‘We’re going to win this for Mineral Wells,’ and that’s what we did.”
The next game will be at Aledo Bearcat stadium at 7:30 on Friday, April 9th when the Rams take on Diamond-Hill Jarvis High School for the Regional Final game.
