Did you know that all children that reside in Mineral Wells ISD can attend Pre-Kindergarten at Lamar Elementary? This is vastly different than most early childhood programs which only accept qualifiers or charge a participation fee.

Students need Pre-K now more than ever to work on social skills, fine arts skills, and Kindergarten readiness. Students that attend Pre-K are typically more advanced than students that do not attend. Most students leave Pre-K above the state-recommended levels, know all of their letters and sounds, and many leave as readers. This is an excellent opportunity for children to learn songs and rhymes, meet new friends on the playground, and have more hands-on learning.

Now in its fifth year, Lamar’s highly-qualified, full-day program offers certified teachers that also have additional early childhood and guided reading training to meet diverse needs through small group and whole group instruction and centers. Each Pre-K classroom has a paraprofessional to meet the recommended 11:1 ratio. Students participate in music, art, physical education, and technology classes. Lamar also has a state-of-the-art library and makerspace where students work on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, math) projects. Students also participate in the district’s 1-to-1 technology initiative with Pre-K students having their own iPad. All MWISD students receive free breakfast and lunches daily.

Lamar has partnered with Head Start to create dually-enrolled classrooms where students receive services through Head Start in addition to the regularly scheduled Pre-K program and curriculum with a highly-qualified certified Lamar teacher.

Lamar will also be registering any new Kindergarten or First grade students on this day also. Registration is April 29th from 9:00am to 6:00pm in the Lamar gym. The MWISD District Librarians will be providing books for summer reading and families will leave registration with resources to be better prepared for the school year.
