Want to support locally owned businesses and help grow our community? Donnie and Darla Lemons, who are close personal friends and some of the best people I know, took over the Hatchet House, an axe throwing / bar / live music venue / hangout hub for Mineral Wells in December 2020. So many cool things to do in one place. If you spend some time with the Lemon family at the updated Hatchet House, it is likely you too will see how awesome they are!

Donnie and Darla, with help from their sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, spent weeks renovating Hatchet House to their liking. They invite all to come on over and tell them what you think about the new look and feel. I have no doubt that the improvements are far from finished. Donnie never stops thinking about how to make things better.

Donnie grew up throwing knives and recently got back into the hobby. He has dreamed of opening a knife throwing facility and was passionate and vocal about it with anyone he talked to. So, when he heard from all his friends that someone was opening a hatchet place here in town, he was disappointed he had not acted sooner. It may not have been knives, but it was close enough to step on his dream a little bit. This is why he was so excited when the opportunity to take over the Hatchet House came up. His mind was at full speed on things he knew he could do to make this place better. The first thing he did was improve the targets. Then he took the time to personalize it a bit. The goal was for Hatchet House to be a place to hang out and join the Lemon’s big circle of family and friends. They also want to open the back patio for bigger music opportunities, archery, and yes, of course, knife throwing.

I have yet to throw an axe… Donnie did teach my wife, and she enjoyed it. I considered learning how to throw just for the writing of this article which would have made Donnie so happy, but I ran out of time before going to press. You don’t have to be into axe throwing to have a good time at Hatchet House. If you want to throw but have no idea how, Donnie or one of his sons will show you, because helping is the Lemons’ love language.

Only two blocks from the historic Baker Hotel, this is the perfect place to spend your evening. You can order a beer, listen to some live music, grab some food from the truck out back, buy a t-shirt designed by their daughter-in-law, Naomi, and of course, hurl sharp things at a wall…

Here is a video by The Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce about The Hatchet House worth checking out.
