Homer Ray Hensley
6/25/1936 – 3/14/2021



Homer Ray Hensley was born at home on the family farm in Victory, Oklahoma, on June 25, 1936. He was the middle son of Elmer and Vergie Hensley, and he had two brothers, Don Hensley and Jim Hensley.

Homer attended Victory school until the 8th grade when the family moved into Altus, Oklahoma. He graduated from Altus High School, Class of 1955 and attended Southwestern University in Weatherford, Oklahoma and graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and Industrial Arts. Homer was a proud member of the Oklahoma National Guard for several years.

He accepted a teaching position in Midland, Texas, in the fall of 1960, and soon after he met Jean Carey, an elementary teacher from Breckenridge, Texas. Jean and Homer were married on November 25, 1960. While living in Midland they enjoyed the additions to their family with daughter Carey Jyme and son, Jon Kirk.

Homer was a beloved coach of football, basketball and track for 13 years in Midland. In 1966 he received his Master’s Degree in Education from Southwestern University. Prior to leaving Midland, Homer served as Athletic Director at Goddard Junior High School. Homer continued his teaching and coaching when he and his family moved to Mineral Wells, Texas in 1973. Homer completed 34 years in public education serving as a coach for 23 of those years and retired in 1994.

Homer and Jean, spent their retirement years travelling throughout the United States in their RV and taking trips to Mexico, Costa Rica, and Ireland. Homer especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Vergie Hensley. He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 60 years, Jean Hensley; his daughter Carey Petersen and husband, Greg; his son Jon Kirk Hensley and wife, Sheena; his grandson Michael Arroyo; his granddaughter Rachael Arroyo and wife, Ashlee Watson Arroyo; granddaughter Ada Hensley; great granddaughters Isabelle Jeanne Arroyo, Elaina Rae Arroyo and Julia Marie Arroyo; brother Don Hensley and wife, Sharon; brother, Jim Hensley and wife, Mary; numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a Celebration of Life at The Creek Church, 4901 N. Main St., Fort Worth, Texas on April 10, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. Homer’s final act of love was the donation of his body for study to the University of North Texas Health Science Center. Memorial contributions can be made to the Ada Carey
