State Champion CCS Lady Warriors has a nice ring to it. That’s the title they earned this weekend when they sealed the season with yet another big win over Victory Christian Academy in the TCAF state final game in Fort Worth. The CCS Warriors played just prior, bringing the win back to Mineral Wells and taking 3rd place in the TCAF playoff tournament.
CCS Lady Warriors 72, VCA Lady Patriots 42
The Lady Warriors finished their impressive season 25-2, including a 7-0 district record, to “finish the mission” according to team members and coaches. They had a goal, win the game they lost last year. That game was the state championship game where they fell short and ended up with a still impressive 2nd place finish. They came out of the gate quickly after tip-off at Lake Country Christian School, and never looked back. Impressive 1st and 3rd quarters where they more than doubled their opponents scoring is what sealed the deal. 3 Lady Warriors scored in double-digits, Seniors Hena Spahic and Elaina Buchanan, and Sophomore Kate Buchanan. E. Buchanan also reached double digits in rebounds and Spahic topped assists with 9. Another highlight for E. Buchanan was her impressive 8 blocks. She earned the All-Tournament award, and Spahic earned MVP. The Ladies of CCS, coaches included, were all tears and smiles after the game, giving out lots of hugs, so Goodday Mineral Wells wasn’t able to get a word from Coach Kayla Buchanan on this big win, but we heard a lot of “I’m so proud of you girls,” and I think that speaks for itself. It was a great season, and from all of us at Goodday MW, Congratulations Coach Buchanan, Coach Ballenger, and CCS Lady Warriors!

CCS Warriors 61, St. Paul’s Prep 53
In a very competitive matchup between these two for the second time this season, the CCS Warriors came out on top and left with the 3rd place title in the TCAF State Tournament. The Warriors were down for almost the entire first half, including being behind 24-31 going in to halftime but never gave up, even after sharpshooting Junior Jackson Horton ran into foul trouble and had to sit out for a time. In the second half, the Warriors battled back and finished strong, coming out on top. Coach Rodericks said of his guys after the game, “We knew we had this in us.” and added, “It’s not the one we wanted but they finished on a strong note.”
With Horton out with foul trouble in the second and third quarters, a couple of other Warriors stepped up and put points on the board, Senior guard Joshua Guzman racked up 28 points, and Junior Bryce Haralson added 13. Horton came up big in other ways though, alongside Haralson, both players grabbed 9 rebounds and 4 steals each and Senior Riggin Parker came away with 5 steals to pair with 7 points. After the game, Guzman was named to the All-State tournament team.
The Warriors will return all but 2 of their players for next season, and Coach Brian Rodricks commented on that during the post game interview, “We have a good nucleus.” So on behalf of Goodday Mineral Wells, congratulations boys on a fun season, and on your strong finish in the tournament!
