Mineral Wells is gearing up to send at least 3 of their own athletes to the collegiate level to play their respective sports.

“The ability to compete at the college level is something only a small group can attain, and we are proud of the ones who have signed so far, and more are to come.” Exciting words from new Athletic Director, Seth Hobbs. Although new to his role as AD, Hobbs has seen these athletes through all 4 years of high school, having been a part of the MWISD family for 6 years.

Taylor Gary, Dallas Christian College

Senior volleyball player, Taylor Gary gathered with family, friends, teammates, and coaches to sign her letter to play at the next level on February 2nd in the MWHS library. The setter, who plans on pursuing Sports Management or Sports Psychology, was all smiles, and her fellow volleyball players were proud to celebrate with her. Fellow senior, Mackenzie Lawhon noted, “I’ve played with Taylor since elementary school, 5th grade I think, and watching her grow as an athlete and a friend has been an honor and I can’t wait to see where she goes with her athletic career.”

Taylor’s mother, Tonya Gary, gave credit to her coaches for pushing her and encouraging her to pursue higher education. She added they were the ones who gave Taylor the idea to pursue the two options aforementioned careers, hoping she will go the extra mile and get her Master’s degree. Several coaches gathered around and were eager to give Taylor pointers for navigating college, but closed with Head Coach Erin Rincon saying this about Taylor, “I’ve been a part of Taylor’s athletic career, and watched her grow in to an incredibly coachable athlete. She stayed persistent in setting this opportunity up for herself and it shows great character. It’ll be hard to play without her next year but she will do great things and will represent Mineral Wells well.”

Emotions were high during a moment where 2 letterman jackets could be found laid out on a table nearby. One was Taylor’s, the other belonging to her cousin, Taryn Hoover, a 2003 MWHS graduate, who passed away in 2009. According to Tonya, Taryn and Taylor were close, and Taylor wore Taryn’s jacket until she was able to earn her own.

Emily Guzman and Wendy Ramirez, Cisco College

This dynamic duo, signed their letter to play at the next level Wednesday, February 3rd, in the MWHS Ram Stadium field house, with a crowd of family, friends, teammates and more.
These two young ladies have played together since Pre-K according to a post by the Guzman family celebrating this big day for their daughter and her teammate.

“Both of them have been assets to the program,” says Coach Rolando Borjon of Ramirez and Guzman. “Emily is a true 4 year starter and has grown a lot. Running Cross Country and Track has complimented her skill and her game. Wendy too, although they have different styles of play. She has the ability to see the field and place the ball and is just a great asset.” He is most proud of them for their off-the-field behavior though, “Just great kids, in the classroom, and never getting in any trouble or causing problems. I’m proud of them, from seeing where they started to now getting the opportunity to play at the next level. something not everyone gets.”

The praises of them didn’t stop there, teammates spoke highly of the two young ladies as well, Junior Allee Elder added, “I’ve played with them my whole soccer career and they have always been there for us on and off the field and never lack commitment to the sport.” And another teammate, Sidney Dow spoke on their “never give up attitudes” in her second year to play alongside Guzman and Ramirez.

Aside from playing soccer, Emily will be pursuing a degree in Criminal psychology, and Wendy will be studying Kinesiology with the goal of coaching.
