PRESS RELEASE | AUSTIN, TX – Dr. Glenn Rogers was officially sworn in today as representative of Texas House District 60.
“Eighteen months ago, I decided to run for office because I felt like our district needed a strong voice in the legislature that would stand up for rural Texas and rural Texas values,” said Rogers. “I was humbled and honored by the support I received from the people of District 60 in the election. Now it is time to get to work.”
The Texas Constitution requires the legislature to balance the state’s budget. Rogers joins a state legislature that must find ways to address budgetary shortfalls created by the COVID-19 pandemic while balancing the needs of state agencies. “Rural Texas often receives disproportionate cuts when the budget is addressed,” Rogers said. “These cuts often come at the expense of rural healthcare and public education. We must balance our budget, but we cannot do that at the expense of the health and education of rural Texans.”
Addressing issues related to rural healthcare and public education are top priorities for Rogers. Texas leads the nation in rural hospital closures, while rural Texas schools struggle with funding necessary programs.
Redistricting will also be on the legislature’s schedule for this session. Texas stands to gain multiple districts and it is the legislature’s responsibility to create these.
The 87th Texas Legislature opens today and is scheduled to adjourn on May 31, 2021, though this may change if a special session is called by the governor.
