The incident happened on the morning of Sunday, December 13, 2020
Press Release:
”Engine 34 was hit while parked/operating at a vehicle accident scene on Interstate 20 this morning. Four firefighters lives were put in immediate danger, some were still in the vehicle, and a three month old $650,000 fire engine is now out of service for the citizens of Aledo and Parker County thanks to the carelessness and complete disregard of the law, and the safety of our first responders, by multiple drivers. In all, four other vehicles wrecked in this incident due to failure to slow down and yield to stationary emergency vehicles. It has become undeniably clear that despite the “Move over slow down law” a substantial amount of drivers seem to only adhere to this law when the emergency vehicle appears to be a law enforcement vehicle. Even still many of our law enforcement colleagues suffer injury and death on roadways as well. That being said, the only rational conclusion is that many people tend to only fear the consequences of a ticket, instead of the reality of having a wreck or injuring themselves and public safety personnel. Every year, first responders in Texas are injured and killed in secondary traffic related incidents. Ordinarily we work hard to keep traffic moving as much as possible for the convenience of motorists. However, we WILL protect our personnel, even if it means shutting down the highway and allowing traffic to backup. Do yourself and us a favor and please slow down, drive the conditions, yield to emergency vehicles of all kinds, and follow the law.”
