MINERAL WELLS, TX – On October 2nd, 2020, Mineral Wells ISD released a public statement instructing remote instruction students that are “failing multiple courses” or who are “disengaged” that they will need to return to in-person school instruction or make the decision to transfer or withdraw from courses.
Per the release given to MWISD families: “Many remote learning students have not been successful at all. A shocking number of them are failing multiple courses. Several have never logged in or communicated at all in six weeks. These students are falling desperately behind and, if we do not act quickly, they may never recover.”
Per Karyn Bullock, Communications Director, 716 students are currently enrolled in remote instruction. The district is unable to release how many students are showing academic decline at this time. However, one truth is very clear: waiting to make this decision will cause further negative effects on the students.
To ensure that students falling behind may recover, MWISD has mandated that all students failing multiple courses must return to in-person instruction starting October 19th, 2020. Per MWISD Superintendent John Kuhn, “If we wait, many will find themselves in a hole they cannot get out of by failing two entire six weeks.” The students are being given until October 19th to either start participating or to make the appropriate choices to prepare.
Students and their families who receive the notification from MWISD to return to in-person instruction will need to make one of the following decisions to remain compliant with compulsory education laws:
- Return to in-person learning on October 19th
- Withdraw to homeschool
- Withdraw and enroll in a charter or private school that provides virtual instruction
- Request a transfer to another district that offers virtual instruction
MWISD will continue to follow all COVID-19 precautionary measures on campus. Students that are performing with passing grades and participating in remote instruction will be able to proceed forward in the Remote Instruction Academy as usual.
Parents with students who will need to begin in-person instruction or make other accommodations will receive a notification from MWISD at the end of the upcoming three weeks grading period.
