06/27/2020 | Mineral Wells, TX | Arissa Viering | Goodday Mineral Wells

The Leadership Mineral Wells Class ’24 has worked incredibly hard to rebuild a missing piece of downtown Mineral Wells: The “Crazy” Sign. After two years of planning, coordinating, and fundraising, The “Crazy” Sign is finally standing in its rightful place over HWY 180. However, this was no easy task…

To find out further updates about this historical piece of downtown, The Wishing Well of Mineral Wells team performed an interview with Cory Crenshaw, President of the Leadership Class ’24.

Not only did funds have to be raised so that the sign could be rebuilt, but the Leadership Class had to consult with TXDOT for permission along with the city, AT&T, and Oncor. According to Crenshaw, TXDOT regulations do not permit signs to be built over highways if they are an advertisement. Luckily for Mineral Wells, the “Crazy” Sign is a historical sign. The origins of the “Crazy” Sign lead back to an advertisement pointing in the direction of the “Crazy Pharmacy.” Due to its historical importance and the fact that the sign is not a direct advertisement of a current business in operation, TXDOT approved. The “Crazy” Sign is one of only two signs constructed across a major highway in Texas.

After permissions were granted, a few updates were made to the new sign including the addition of LED lights and raised letters to allow for ease of future upkeep and maintenance. The Leadership Class ’24 plans to host a party when the sign is lit. Due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the class has postponed the sign lighting until further notice.

A lot of effort and time was spent to reconstruct this beautiful sign. The Leadership Class ’24 is still in need of additional funds at this time. Contributions are tax-deductible to the Envision Mineral Wells Foundation. Donors may also purchase an engraved brick through the ‘buy a brick’ program.
